Welcome on the website of The Netherlands – Sri Lanka Business Council.

The Netherlands – Sri Lanka Business Council was established in 2000 to promote and support trade, business and investments by Dutch and Sri Lankan companies. The business council wants to offer a platform where entrepreneurs can get practical information, exchange experiences and share knowledge on The Netherlands, Sri Lanka and the opportunities both countries can offer each other.

The economic ties between The Netherlands and Sri Lanka date back to 1655, when Dutch traders assisted the King of Kandy to overwhelm the Portuguese rulers. After the English took power in 1796 the Dutch remained a part of the social and cultural heritage. Everybody who visits Sri Lanka gets to know the Dutch Fort in Galle, many visit the Dutch Museum in Pettah and the existence of the Dutch Burgher Union is widely known. No wonder the economic ties lasted for centuries and the two countries find many ways to stipulate their heritage with new economic activities.

On this site you will find information about Sri Lanka, The Netherlands, historic ties, internet links to various sources and institutions and news / stories about Dutch companies active in Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan companies active in the Netherlands.

The board of the Business Council is very interested in existing business contacts between Sri Lanka and The Netherlands. Our first goal is to have a broad representation of companies in our council to exchange information and experiences. When you are working with a company or institute with ties in both countries please register yourself by sending your contact details to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. With the web-based information platform we want to assist and encourage “new” companies to start business in Sri Lanka or The Netherlands. Your input to our site (facts, anecdotes, usefull tips, encountered problems or any other information you want to share) is highly appreciated.

Every three months we issue an email newsletter. If you want to subscribe to this free newsletter, send your email address and contact details to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

We hope this website will give you the information you were looking for and we hope you will visit our site or our meetings again in the future. Please drop us a mail if you miss content, disagree with content or if you feel the structure of the councils website should be altered.
